Short-form video feature in the TV 2 Sport App

We teamed up with TV 2 to launch a game-changing short-form video experience in their sports app. Designed for mobile and powered by AI, this sleek new feature delivers instant, swipeable sports highlights that drive engagement, boost shareability, and connect with younger audiences.

About our client

TV 2 is Norway’s leading commercial television broadcaster, delivering a wide range of entertainment, news, and sports content to audiences nationwide.

Launched in 1992, TV 2 is headquartered in Bergen and operates multiple channels, including TV 2 Direkte (main channel), TV 2 Nyheter (news channel), TV 2 Sport (sports channels), and TV 2 Play (streaming service).

Project background

In 2023, as part of our long-standing partnership with TV 2, we delivered a new short video content feature on the existing TV 2 Sport mobile app. The addition focused on improving the way fans interact with sports highlights – providing dynamic, scrolling, AI-generated content in a form tailored to mobile users.

TV 2 Sport was already serving as a destination for live and on-demand sports coverage in Norway. Our aim was to expand its capabilities by adding space for short video content – fast, easy to share, and endlessly engaging.

Collaboration and integration

This was a multi-team effort that required seamless integration between several specialised partners. One technology partner provided the AI-based system for automatically generating short clips from full-length broadcasts. The client was responsible for backend infrastructure and secure storage of video assets. Content delivery was handled via an external content management system, which exposed the videos through API-based access.

Our responsibility was to design and implement the mobile frontend for both iOS and Android, ensuring a responsive, stable, and visually consistent experience that fit naturally within the existing app framework. Close cooperation with all involved parties was essential to maintain performance and user experience across a complex, integrated solution.

Scope of work

We built the frontend module for both platforms with a focus on performance, user experience, and visual consistency. Key features included:

  • A dedicated screen showcasing short-form video content.
  • Intuitive gesture controls: Swipe left/right to navigate between clips / Long press for additional options and interactions
  • Infinite scroll / lazy loading so users can browse endlessly without interruption.
  • Ability to save and manage favourite clips in a personalised list.
  • Support for guest users, lowering entry barriers for first-time users.
• Built-in sharing options to promote viral content spread.
  • Smooth category transitions, allowing quick switching between content types
  • Performance optimisation, including: Preloading of 2 clips ahead and 2 clips behind for seamless playback / Memory management with up to 5 video players handled efficiently at runtime.

Challenges and approach

Short-form video on mobile brings several technical challenges: managing memory and playback, working with third-party APIs, and keeping everything stable within an existing app.

We focused on:

  • Fast load times and smooth transitions, even with high-resolution videos.
  • A UI built for quick browsing, similar to popular formats like Reels or TikTok, but in line with TV 2’s visual identity.
  • A modular structure, allowing TV 2 to reuse the feature in other apps or future updates.

Outcome and the next steps

The feature was delivered on time and successfully launched after a 4-month development cycle. It has been very well received – generating high viewership numbers and strong engagement. Internal teams are happy with the results, and it’s clearly resonating with younger audiences who prefer shorter content formats.

Because of its modular setup, the solution can be adapted for other sports content or even for other TV 2 platforms. This project is a good example of combining strong technical skills, mobile know-how, and effective teamwork across multiple partners – all to deliver a feature that fits both user habits and client goals.
