About Canal Digital

Canal Digital has a rich content offering, with over 100 TV channels available from all over the world. It’s also the entertainment platform of choice for close to 840 000 households in the Nordics. Through its streaming services, the company offers live TV, a weekly archive, and 28 000 titles available on demand.

Canal Digital has offices in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. It’s a wholly owned subsidiary of Telenor, with headquarters in Fornebu, Oslo. The Canal Digital Brand is used by both the Nordic satellite TV operations and by Telenor’s cable TV operations in Norway.

Project goal

Our cooperation with Canal Digital began with a MVP (Minimum Viable Product) project for tablets only. As it appeared to have a promising value, Canal Digital decided to expand the product to a variety of platforms, resulting in the expansion of our partnership.

The project began in 2013, and the product that was delivered back then is now the base of the current application. We have also optimized Chrome Cast for Set Top Box solutions.

General problem

Next, Canal Digital wanted to develop a proof of concept (PoC)/MVP for a mobile app. The purpose of this business decision was to identify business opportunities and market demands. With positive feedback in hand, our team at Better Software Group developed a fully functional Android and iOS mobile app named Canal Digital Go.

Problems solved

New devices can be challenging, for instance, the first Chromecast didn’t work well because of DRMs when the 3st generation was released. It was crucial to take this into account when developing the solution. It’s always wise to minimize technical debt whenever new technology comes out. This is why BSG always pays extra attention to staying up-to-date with latest technologies and strives for constant improvement when delivering solutions, especially when working on long-term projects.

Solution

We delivered a fully functional mobile streaming app for iOS and Android. The app includes features like live TV, VOD (movies and series), download option to watch content offline, kids mode, EPG, remote recording, AirPlay, and Chromecast.

What we have learned

Working with Canal Digital taught us how to communicate effectively in large teams. Moreover, we also learned about SAFe and its implementation process – our project team took part in a SAFe dedicated training and passed the certification, which is another significant skill added to our business offering.
